The following spills were reported to the Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission in the past two weeks.

Information is based on Form 19, which operators must fill out detailing the leakage/spill events. Any spill release that may impact waters of the state must be reported as soon as practical. Spills and leaks typically are found during routine maintenance on existing wells, though some actual “spills” do occur among the 18,000-plus wells in the county.

» BONANZA CREEK ENERGY OPERATING COMPANY LLC reported Aug. 23 a recent spill near Weld County roads 89 and 56, about 13 miles northeast of Orchard. Between 5 and 100 barrels of oil spilled and less than 5 barrels of produced water spilled. The operator found a failed firetube on the separator during a routine inspection. The separator was depressurized and all remaining fluid was sucked out.

» NOBLE ENERGY INC reported Aug. 23 a historical flowline spill near Weld 57 and 44 about 10 miles south of Kersey. An unknown amount of oil, condensate and produced water spilled. Lab analysis indicated a historical release happened along the decommissioned flowline in two locations. Two soil samples exceeded COGCC standards for benzene, toluene, 1,2,4-trimethylbenzene, 1,3,5-trimethylbenzene, naphthalene, total petroleum hydrocarbons, 1- methylnaphthalene and 2-methylnaphthalene.

» NOBLE ENERGY INC reported Aug. 23 a historical tank battery spill near Weld 57 and 44, about 10 miles south of Kersey. An unknown amount of oil, condensate and produced water spilled. Lab analysis indicated a historical release happened at the decommissioned tank battery. One soil sample exceeded COGCC standards for 1-methylnaphthalene and 2-methylnaphthalene.

» CRESTONE PEAK RESOURCES OPERATING LLC reported Aug. 19 a recent tank battery spill near Weld 28 and 5 in Longmont. The operator found a failed fire tube during morning inspections. Approximately 2 barrels of produced water spilled. The spill was partially contained within containment. Initial impacts were cleaned up via hydrovac.

» NOBLE ENERGY INC reported Aug. 19 a historical tank battery spill near Cherry Avenue and east 8th Street in Greeley. An unknown amount of oil, condensate and produced water spilled. Lab analysis indicated a historical release at the decommissioned tank battery. Two soil samples exceeded COGCC standards for 1,2,4-trimethylbenzene, 1,3,5-trimethylbenzene, total petroleum hydrocarbons, benzo(a)anthracene, 1- methylnaphthalene and 2-methylnaphthalene.

» KP KAUFFMAN COMPANY INC reported Aug. 17 a recent flowline spill near Weld 29 1/2 and 12, about 4 miles east of Fort Lupton. An unknown amount of oil and produced water spilled. The surface owner reported a leak. The operator sent a crew to shut in wells and begin an investigation and cleanup of a leaking flowline.

» KERR MCGEE OIL & GAS ONSHORE LP reported Aug. 15 a historical well spill near Colo. 66 and Weld 55, about 2 miles southwest of Platteville. An unknown amount of oil, condensate and produced water spilled. Historically impacted soil was found following cut and cap and flowline removal at the wellhead. Excavation and assessment are ongoing.

» KERR MCGEE OIL & GAS ONSHORE LP reported Aug. 12. a historical well spill near Weld 37 and 22, about 10 minutes southeast of Platteville. An unknown amount of oil, condensate and produced water spilled. Historically impacted soil was found near the wellhead during plugging and abandonment. The volume of the release is unknown. Assessment is ongoing.

» KERR MCGEE OIL & GAS ONSHORE LP reported Aug. 12 a historical flowline spill near Union Street and Arbor Street in Firestone. An unknown amount of oil, condensate and produced water spilled. Historically impacted groundwater was found near the flowline during plugging and abandonment. The volume of the release is unknown and assessment is ongoing.
