CARTAGENA.The Department of Urbanism of Cartagena has given its approval to the declaration of responsibility presented by Repsol for the installation of a new fuel gas compressor to feed an existing unit and a new one, which will contribute to improving the energy efficiency of the Escombreras plant, reducing the net production of high-pressure steam without increasing hydrogen production.Let us remember that the works consist of the replacement of the compressor of its Platformado unit. The new equipment, which will improve the energy efficiency of the unit, avoiding the emission of 19,800 tons of CO2 per year, represents an investment of 14.7 million euros. The project has obtained support of 314,000 euros through the line of aid for energy saving and efficiency in SMEs and large companies in the industrial sector, co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), coordinated by IDAE and managed by the Autonomous Communities , charged to the National Fund for Energy Efficiency, with the aim of achieving a cleaner and more sustainable economy. This action is added to other projects in the same unit, such as the start-up in 2019 of an air preheater in the furnace, allowing the highest efficiency of a process furnace in Spain to be achieved. The Platformado unit is the one that transforms Nafta into the main component for the production of gasoline that is used in the daily movements of vehicles. The Repsol refinery in Cartagena is immersed in a process of industrial transformation to achieve its goal of being a net zero emissions company by 2050. To achieve this, it has a Strategic Plan for the period 2021-2025, which includes important projects for its facilities del Valle de Escombreras as the first advanced biofuels plant in Spain. The new units, which will come into operation in the first half of 2023, will involve an investment of 200 million euros. They will have the capacity to produce 250,000 tons per year of advanced biofuels such as biodiesel, biojet, bionaphtha and biopropane, which can be used in planes, ships, trucks or cars, without the need to modify current engines. These sustainable fuels, which will be produced from waste, will reduce 900,000 tons of CO2 per year.In this way, Repsol relies on the circular economy, as one of its strategic pillars, to manufacture products with a low, zero or even negative carbon footprint. On March 7, Repsol began the construction of the first advanced biofuels plant in Spain, in which it is investing 200 million euros."The Escombreras Valley is a global energy hub that continues to grow and improve, with renovated facilities and a firm commitment to sustainability. A clear example of this is the plant that Repsol is building, and which is the first advanced biofuels plant From the Department of Urbanism we redouble our commitment to the industrial sector of Cartagena, streamlining as far as possible all the administrative procedures so that not only can new industrial facilities be carried out, but also so that they can generate jobs quality work," said the deputy mayor, Ana Belén Castejón.
